タンブラーを創立したデビッド・カープは、ニューヨーク生まれの25歳。14歳でアニメのプロデューサーのもとでインターンを始め、その後、年齢を隠して、都市部に住む母親が情報交換するためのサイト「アーバン・ベイビー・ドットコム」でソフトウェアコンサルタントを務めたという“神童”だった。

ショートフォームのブログ「タンブログ」という言葉が登場したときに、どこかのIT企業がプラットフォームを作るのを待っていたが、その動きがなかったために自分で作ってしまったことを複数のインタヴューで明かしている。
